Here's where to find this design.

This style of design always intrigues me; I'm such a big fan of the designs that came from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. This particular piece, designed by Jeff Miller, emulates the style of those eras with the diffuse-looking color palette, the image in the background, the rules that flank the type on the right side, and the transparent stencil that anchors the center of the book cover. I really enjoy how design can outlast its time period, as this clearly shows! Compositionally, I like how the image crops in about 3/4ths of the subjects' faces, isolating unnecessary space from the main focus.

  1. I'm not a huge fan of the 40's, 50's and 60's, but I do really like this. Jeff Miller definitely was successful showing this style. I like that the circle around the type is transparent, I think that it adds a little bit of a modern feel to it. But the illustration style and color pallete definitely keep the vintage style. I think that the elements work together really well, bringing old and new elements together in harmony.

    1. You're absolutely right, it really does find its niche in bringing the old and new of design and combining those elements together. Nice observations Rachel!

  2. I like designs that are vintage. I love the vintage feel. However, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think it's...interesting, that's the word I'm looking for. I'm not a fan of the the different colored type in the transparent blue circle. I feel like that should be one color. However, I like the illustration style. It captures the style of illustration used at the time. I also like how it's cropped in on the two faces (even if they look so happy that it makes it look kind of creepy, just saying....) .

    1. I really appreciate your honesty about this piece Malia! I can agree that the different colors of the central type seems like a confused design decision, definitely. I also really like your observation of the illustration!

    2. Also, you're right about their faces. (It's good design, but it is really...creepy).
